GWNZ Fellowship, 2020 - 2021

Vanessa Bramwell

Vanessa Bramwell PhD; Massey University I am thrilled to be offered this fellowship. I have been following news from Graduate Women NZ and would love to be involved in the network, which I think has a very important kaupapa.

My research aims to improve operational policy on children and their caregivers who are affected by armed conflict – a group whose needs have gone unmet in conflict intervention. The research assesses conceptual norms in UN operational literature around children affected by armed conflict, and how these affect policy planning. I extend conceptual frameworks  initially proposed in this field by critical feminist scholars of Australia and New Zealand.

I have received a Peace and Disarmament Education Trust scholarship for the 2019 year, and an Asia New Zealand Foundation research grant for travel (now postponed due to covid-19). I have also been invited to produce two chapters for upcoming edited collections on human rights in war and childhoods affected by conflict, to be published in well-regarded academic presses. I have been invited to present at the 2020 Oceanic Conference on International Studies in Canberra and received a travel bursary; as well as the 2021 International Studies Association Conference, with accompanying published edited collection.
