GWNZ Fellowship, 2020 - 2021

Lingjung Leathwick

Lingjung Leathwick PhD; University of Auckland I'm very honoured to receive this Fellowship. I'm super excited about joining the member's network too!

I am in my second year as a full-time PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Auckland. My research focus is artificial intelligence (AI) methodology for genetic data. My background is in Biomedical Science and Computer Science. After graduating, I worked as a data scientist for four years. While employed, I published papers including one that was chosen as a finalist for NZSAP’s Young Member Award Competition.

Over the last few years, I have volunteered for several community causes including planting native trees, judging for the regional science fair, and providing gardens for low decile schools initiated by New Zealander of the Year, Avis Leeson. I’ve been invited to speak on the topic of Artificial Intelligence ethics across New Zealand.

The techniques developed in this research will be practical, increasing the productivity of artificial breeding programs, improving human health, and identifying at-risk groups towards viruses like COVID-19.
