Simone Gabriel

Simone Gabriel PhD in Creative Activism at Massey University

Simone Gabriel is a creative activism scholar of Indigenous Māori and Pākehā heritage and a lecturer with the College of Creative Arts at Massey University in Wellington. A former writer and development producer in the Australian screen culture sector and wider creative and performing arts, Simone returned home to Aotearoa in 2016 where she now lives on the Kāpiti Coast. A doctoral candidate in a PhD in Creative Activism (Indigenous Ecopsychology & Ritual Studies) with Massey University’s School of Humanities, Media and Creative Communication, Simone is a recipient of the 2021 Massey University Māori Doctoral Scholarship. With a long-lived interest in earth-based spiritual practice and the creative arts, Simone looks forward to collaborating with Māori and Pākehā wāhine in the artistic development of transformational ritual processes for personal, social and environmental change. This is the project focus of her GWNZ Fellowship.
