Sarahmarie Kuroko, PhD in Child sleep health, Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka | the University of Otago

Sarahmarie Kuroko (Ngāti Kahungunu, Pākehā) is completing her PhD at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka | the University of Otago, in child sleep health. Young tamariki sleeping well is important for their health and development, along with whānau wellbeing. Although there is a lot of advice for parents about bedtime routines and what to do/avoid before bed to help tamariki sleep better, most research behind this advice has been limited in how evening activities and sleep were measured. Using wearable cameras and sleep sensors to measure evening activities and sleep more accurately, Sarahmarie is exploring whether some activities are more important for sleep than others, and/or whether the activities are less important, but broader factors like consistency or connection are key.
