GWW support summer studentship

At the Branch meeting on 25 March we had a report back from our recipient of the Summer Research Programme at Otago University (Wellington) Laura Oei.

Laura is a fourth year medical student studying in Wellington and this was her first introduction to laboratory research. She loved it! Her work built on to the existing research. A summer studentship at UO (Wellington) typically lasts around 10 weeks.

Laura was joined by Dr Kirsty Danielson the Associate Dean Research for UO (Wellington) and leads the Surgical Cancer Research Group. GWW Charitable Trust awards $7000 to this programme each year. Kirsty outlined the scope of the programme and also the work she has done in assessing the effects of Extracellular Vesicles (EVs)on Triple Negative BreastCancer which is the most aggressive form of breast cancer with a very limited number of options for effective treatment. EVs are naturally occurring nanoparticles that can target other cells in the body for molecular cargo.

This excellent presentation provoked a good question and answer session and discussion.
