The focus of the study is rural NZ women’s paid and unpaid work. This includes self-employment/business ownership – both in agriculture and non-farming employment. The project will analyse census data to obtain factual background information about rural women to compare against information already available about rural New Zealanders (my study of the total rural population of 20 territorial district councils analysed at the area unit level). It will be a 2013 snapshot as this census data is still the best available, but hopefully 2023 census data when available will enable updates to be made. I will also be reviewing literature to understand what has been written about and by rural women in Aotearoa/New Zealand and how the lives of rural women have changed particularly since the 1980s.
