Madeline Hayward undertook her PhD studies at AUT.
Globally, police officers have frequently become first responders to jobs involving mental distress. International research indicates that these interactions often constitute negative experiences for people in mental distress and pose challenges for police.
Madeline will discuss the findings of her doctoral research on this topic. She used qualitative methods including interviews, focus groups, and ride-alongs in police cars to understand how police are responding to these types of jobs and how these interactions are experienced by people in mental distress in Aotearoa New Zealand.
