Purpose

The purpose of the Harriette Jenkins Awards are to encourage members of GWNZ to undertake study or research. The awards are made in recognition of service to GWNZ whether at Branch or national/international level.  

Funds may be spent on incidental expenses related to study or research, for example costs of travel, child care, or specific research costs; funds may not be spent on conference travel.

Eligibility criteria

The applicant is a female degree graduate, who:

  • is an active member of GWNZ and has been a member for at least two full years
  • is undertaking a research project or research degree with in an approved tertiary institution in New Zealand or overseas
  • is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • does not currently hold another GWNZ - Charitable Trust scholarship

Award History

Harriette worked consistently for the advancement of women’s training and education and was an active, dedicated member of NZFUW. Following attending IFUW meetings in Zurich and Paris Harriette was convinced of the need for closer and continuing communication among countries and peoples.  

Harriette Jenkins was Treasurer of the Nelson Branch from 1951-1962 and was made a Life Member of the Branch.  Harriette died soon after this award was established and left a bequest to NZFUW. The fund and award is named in her honour.
