GWNZ Fellowship, 2020

Philippa Moran

Commencing in September 2019, Philippa will undertake a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

The LLM involves a 10,000-word thesis and taught modules including European Human Rights Law, Climate Change and International Law, World Poverty and Human Rights, and Comparative Constitutional Rights. Her thesis will examine whether New Zealand is fulfilling its obligations to protect citizens’ economic, social and cultural rights in providing the necessities of life for communities rendered vulnerable in the wake of natural disaster. Undertaking an LLM is a prerequisite to becoming an advocate with an international human rights organisation such as the United Nations or Red Cross. Ultimately, Philippa would like to work for the New Zealand government, drawing on international experience to improve national human rights measures.
