Studying at Otago University’s Department of Biochemistry and Department of Maths and Statistics, former Takapuna Grammar pupil Anezka Hoskin considers it a huge honour and privilege to work with her own iwi.
She is part of a team that previously found two genotypes that link Māori and Pasifika people with gout and are now trying to determine a similar genetic link between Māori and Type 2 diabetes using her iwi’s donated DNA.
Further to her studies, Anezka works with Science Wānanga targeting rural Māori communities and Ka Rikarika a Tane, a first-year mentoring program for Māori students.
