Priscilla Lowry: In the Footsteps of Marco Polo, Life along the Old Silk Road

10 for 10.30am

02 March 2023

Robertson Room, St Peter’s Church, 11 Killarney Street, Takapuna

Silk was a most precious commodity, its origins a closely guarded secret. It proclaimed wealth and power and was the currency of trade with hundreds of forms and uses.
Marco Polo’s travels have inspired travellers to this present day.

Priscilla Lowry taught Home Economics before establishing Galerie St John in Remuera where she specialized in silk, especially wearable art. She gained her BA in Art History and Education at Auckland University, and her MA in Medieval History at London University. The author of three books on the history of silk, she was the director of the Schuster Gallery in London, specializing in Medieval manuscripts, antique prints and antiquarian books.
Priscilla travelled extensively to lecture and on her return to New Zealand taught at Auckland University. She had a number of exhibitions of her own work and was commissioned by Takapuna Library to make a pair of long silk wall hangings entitled Reflections on the Shore.

If you would like to attend the meeting as a guest, with or without a view to joining us, you would be most welcome – please introduce yourself when you arrive.
We also welcome visitors from other branches of Graduate Women who may be in Auckland at the time of our meeting.
