I am incredibly grateful to be the 2024 recipient of the GWNZ Susan Byrne Memorial Scholarship. This award will support the completion of the two-year Master of Landscape Architecture programme at Lincoln University.
Prior to pursuing this course of study I had spent the past ten years working as a self-employed Ceramic Artist in Minneapolis, MN and Sheffield, UK after completing a Bachelor of Arts - Studio Arts, Ceramics and Printmaking. Throughout my career I exhibited in gallery exhibitions and contemporary craft events in America and the United Kingdom before moving back to New Zealand in 2019 to be closer to family.
My ceramic pieces are made almost exclusively out of red earthenware clay, one of the most abundant materials on the Earth’s surface. Earthenware clays pick up their colour through the transformative journeys they take through the world's glaciers, rivers, and streams. Having moved between England and New Zealand as a young child, I feel connected to earthenware as a material affected and formed by the places it has passed through. Through hand building, wheel throwing, and slip decorating my practice is a reflection of the places I have called home, and the people who have been a part of my life.
